Fermoselle is a small medieval village located in the province of Zamora, western Spain, and is part of the region of Castile and León in the south-west region of the province.
Fermoselle is a "hollow" town, which hides under its streets and buildings an amazing world of wineries for a vinariega population and whose genesis begins in the Middle Ages. Fermoselle is known as "the town of a thousand wineries".
Although there are documents from the 13th century, it is estimated that most wineries were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Fermosellanos, took advantage of the nights to "go down to the winery". Armed with a lamp to illuminate the work area, they were chopping laboriously, thus gaining ground on the hard granite soil of the area. To consolidate certain areas, stones were carved and stacked to form semicircular arches without any type of mortar. Each house had a warehouse attached and many of them were connected to each other.
