Description
Picote is a civil parish in the municipality of Miranda do Douro, Portugal.
Located in the extreme southeast of the municipality, about 18 km from Miranda and on the border with Spain, the parish has an area of 19.95 km² and 301 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 15.1 inhabitants / km².
In Picote there is an exceptional linguistic case within Portugal, due to the fact that it is a place in which Mirandés is used (it speaks of Leonese) also called in the locality Picotés, which is known and spoken by all its inhabitants (something genuine of the locality), a unique case in Portugal of monolingualism in the Mirandesa language that has been the subject of studies and press articles as an object of curiosity and ethnography.
Picote is an ancient settlement with origins in a proto-historic village overlooking the Douro, probably the most important of the proto-historic settlements located along the river. An ancient record of human presence is the beautiful rock carving of a hunter with a bow, recently discovered in Fraga do Puio. (Description from Wikipedia and picote.jfreguesia.com)
