'La Piedad' of Moissac is one of the oldest preserved in France. It was made in 1476. The author is unknown. The work was commissioned by two wealthy bourgeois from Moissac.
The figure of Mary Magdalene has lost one of her hands, in which she might have carried the jar of ointments with which she anointed Christ's feet, and which constitutes one of her three invariable attributes. The second is the hair, so long that it is capable of covering the entire body, and with which, according to the Gospel account, he wiped the feet of Jesus. In Mediterranean cultures, long and loose hair in women is traditionally taken as a powerful sexual stimulus, which would fit the type of sinful behavior that was attributed to Mary Magdalene.
