Description
New Cathedral of Salamanca, Spain. “Christ who returns to life” by Venancio Blanco in the Chapel of Christ of the Battles.
The Catedral de la Asunción de la Virgen, popularly known as New Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral Nueva) is, together with the Old Cathedral, one of the two cathedrals of Salamanca, Castile and León, Spain.
It was constructed between 1533 and 1733 mixing late Gothic, Plateresque and Baroque styles. It was commissioned by Ferdinand V of Castile. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Spain in size and its bell tower, at 92 meters high, is also one of the tallest.
The Holy Christ of the Battles of the city of Salamanca is a Romanesque image that enjoyed great devotion during the 17th and 18th centuries in that city and in part of the nearby regions. The image was brought from Valencia by Don Jerónimo de Perigord, chaplain of Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar and later, the first bishop of Salamanca after the restitution of the diocese.
The “Christ who returns to life”, by Venancio Blanco, captures the moment of the resurrection of Jesus. The Christ, made with Valsain pine wood and dimensions slightly larger than life (70 cm x 222 cm life invades him, leaving death behind.
