Description
World War I memorial in Bergerac, Dordogne, France.
The city of Bergerac has the characteristic of having three monuments to the dead which commemorate three events:
- The Franco - Prussian War of 1870;
- World War I ;
- World War II and the Resistance.
The First World War monument also bears back plaques honoring other fighters on other battlefields.
In bronze and resting on a pedestal in Vosges stone, the volume of this set forms an inverted pyramid.
The unbalanced position of the two characters, the emptiness under their feet, and the floating forms of the drapery seem to erase the gravity and give the monument an impression of lightness.
Inscription on the monument: TO THE CHILDREN OF THE BERGERAC DEAD BOROUGH FOR THE LAND 1914-1918
Under the mention "Deaths for the Fatherland 1914 - 1918", there is a plaque for the dead of the Second World War.
Below is a plaque honoring the holders of the war cross for the T.O.E. (Theaters of External Operations).
Below, the symbol represents the association of former soldiers called "Rhine and Danube".
This monument also mentions the wars that France waged in its former colonies and protectorates.
