Description
Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral, or at greater length the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Clermont-Ferrand, is a Gothic cathedral and French national monument located in the town of Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne, France.
Clermont Cathedral has an exceptional set of stained glass, from the 12th to the 20th century
The most remarkable stained glass window in the nave south, made by Charles des Granges, was installed in 1877: it represents the gift of relics by Saint Louis and the marriage of his son Philippe-le-Hardi. The marriage was celebrated in the cathedral in 1262, the glassmaker therefore represented it with a lot of imagination, placing Philippe le Hardi and Isabelle d'Aragon in the foreground, and, further below, under a canopy, King Saint Louis and his wife Marguerite de Provence. The figures in the marriage ceremony are portraits of notable Clermont-elders from the stained glass era, the bishop being Mgr FĂ©ron.
The gift of relics (relics of the Passion of Christ and relics of Mary Magdalene) by Saint Louis in 1269 is even more fanciful; nothing proves the presence of the King in Clermont for this occasion. The glassmaker gave the bishop the features of Mgr Grimardias, bishop of Cahors and former parish priest of the Cathedral.
