Description
Santa Barbara Mission, Santa Barbara, California. This California's Spanish mission is on El Camino Real ("The Royal Highway"). The missions represent the arrival of the first non-Native Americans to California. They brought both Christianity and diseases. The Mediterranean -style Saint Barbara Mission, founded in 1786 by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, is beautiful.
The altar of the chapel is the typical mission style with colored background designs, statuary on the sides, and a statue of the patron saint in the center. There is a crypt under the altar and the plaque on the floor in front of the altar names those buried there.
The early missionaries built three different chapels during the first few years, each larger than the previous one. It was only after the Santa Barbara earthquake on December 21, 1812, which destroyed the existing buildings, that the construction on the current Mission was begun. It was completed and then dedicated in 1820.
