Description
Eguisheim (German: Egisheim; Alsatian: Egsa) is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France.
Established in the centre of the place du Château in Eguisheim, the Fontaine Saint-Léon is one of the largest fountains in the entire Alsace region. The structure is octagonal and has a capacity of 80 000 litres. For many years it was the water source for the whole commune; inhabitants would flock there in the morning to fill their bottles and buckets for the day's activities. In the fountain's centre stands a statue of Saint Léon (sculpted by Hugel and blessed in 1880). Leo IX, 1002 - 1054, pope of the Catholic Church from 12 February 1049 to his death in 1054, was a native of Eguisheim.
Eguisheim produces Alsace wine of high quality. In May 2013 it was voted the «Village préféré des Français» (Favorite French Village), an annual distinction that passes from town to town throughout France.
