Art deco dragon designed as shop sign over umbrella in La Rambla, 82, Barcelona, Spain.
'Casa Bruno Cuadros' (House of Umbrellas) is a real architectural gem. And every one who walks along La Rambla Barcelonas most famous street strives to see it.
In the late 19th century, Barcelona was getting ready to host the first international exhibition in Spains history, which was planned for the year 1888. Local entrepreneurs decided to transform their houses on this occasion as well. Bruno Cuadros was one of them. He owned the house that was popularly known as the House of Umbrellas, for an umbrella shop was situated inside.
By the beginning of the reconstruction works, the building was considerably dilapidated and in need of repair. Houses owner invited the prominent architect for this purpose. And he in turn managed to create a true modernist masterpiece.
The architect put decorative embellishments, mostly taken from the Oriental cultures, on the main facade. One of its dcors most renowned elements is the Chinese dragon of hammered iron, which holds a torch in its paws. An umbrella is situated near it. It used to serve as a peculiar signboard for the shop. In addition, the building is adorned with graphites, stained-glass and forged elements, shaped as oriental fans and umbrellas.
The Oriental esthetics is reflected in buildings interior too. It is adorned with carved wooden elements, colorful stained-glass windows and paintings, depicting characters of Japanese engravings.
After the last reconstruction of 1980, a bank occupied the premises of the House of Umbrellas. (Description from barcelonatravelguide.org).
