Image of the the Virgin Mary and stained glass windows in the Chapel of the Apocalypse in Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral, France
Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral, or at greater length the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Clermont-Ferrand, is a Gothic cathedral and French national monument located in the town of Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne, France. It is the seat of the Archbishops of Clermont.
It is built entirely in black lava stone, which makes it highly distinctive, and visible from a great distance. Its twin spires are 96.1 metres tall, and tower above the town's rooftops.
The Chapel of the Apocalypse was built according to the plans of Viollet-le-Duc; it was originally dedicated to Saint Zita, patroness of the servants, whose stained glass window was moved to the south.
The statue of the Virgin in polychromed limestone was sculpted in 1855 by Pierre-Marie Froget. Canon Craplet acquired it in 1980.
Designed and executed from 1980 to 1982 by Alain Makaraviez and his wife Edwige Walmé, the stained glass window of the Apocalypse was commissioned by Canon Bernard Craplet, then parish priest of the cathedral.
Revelation is the last of the books of the Bible. Written by Saint John the Evangelist during his exile at Patmos, it takes up a literary genre used by the prophets Zechariah, Daniel… it is to be interpreted in a symbolic and not literal way; the book shows the tribulations of the saints in the form of persecutions, wars, sufferings ... pending the glorious return of Christ.
The scenes were imposed on the glassmakers by Canon Craplet, who also designated the development: the Living in his mandorla, surrounded by the 24 Old Men of the Apocalypse, the catastrophes that befell the earth, the appearance of the 4 Horsemen, the Great Prostitute on the beast with 7 heads, and the Jerusalem descending from the sky.
But Makaraviez displayed a great imagination in the representation of these scenes, and stuffed them with picturesque details: thus the Living one has the pierced pupils and the light of the setting sun thus enters the cathedral. The 24 old men of the Apocalypse each have a crown "as a masterpiece": the glass has been cut out circularly and an inlay representing a precious stone has been inserted. One of the old men has glasses, another smokes a cigarette ... among those drowned in "bitter" waters is the figure of Munch's "Cry" ... and how many other details!
